The Other Side

Are you close to “getting to the other side" of whatever it is you are striving for? Is what you’re targeting something physically tangible? Is it a goal? Is it a feeling? Does it have monetary, emotional or spiritual value, or merit attached to it? Maybe 2020 was going to be THE year for you but so far it hasn’t delivered. Maybe 2021 has now become the “other” other side.

The other side- The phrase alone evokes a destination, a reaching, an arrival to some ultimate point. So often, the other side may also allude to a triumphant overcoming, a mountain top, a river or sea crossing, a clearing in the forest of life, perhaps arrived at in a linear, singular fashion.

Experience has taught me that this could not be farther from the truth.

The other side exists only in the mind of the sojourner. Far from being a physical, mental or even emotional destination, it can sometimes feels more like a mental or emotional active acceptance; a dawning first recognised in the soul after the spinning, grappling, wrestling of emotions has softened to acceptance that, “not yet” does not mean “never”, or “no”.

I must confess, 2019 was the year that I experienced the widest and deepest range of emotions, all to a backdrop I had no control over. 2020 on the other hand has delivered proof, on a global scale, that we as a collective have very little control and live under the illusion that we actually do.

In this season, I’ve learnt that the other side merely represents the marking, not of arrival, but recognition and acknowledgment. Recognizing that the journeying of the soul is not confined by time or space like the body. Acknowledging that the “other side” is there to confirm a different vantage point of life, not to confine one to the illusion of a predetermined destination.

The other side, the journey continues.
